What is the best place to start to learn about creating/maintaing databases?
Now I am not a big computer expert, so I apologize if this question is too vague or broad. I’m sort of looking for focus on where I need to begin:
I’m basically looking to create a program (eventually) for my horse race handicapping which will be based on stored past results, calculations, notes, etc for past races. As it is now, I keep this stuff by hand, but it can be cuber some and I really need to get with modern technology.
My only database experience is a very limited experience with MS Access, but I am under the impression that it’s not the best software and might be limited for down the road. That being said, a lot of the stuff I keep now IS calculations on Excel spreadsheets, so not sure if that matters.
Anyways, I guess what I am asking: is there a place one should (intelligently) start to work their way up? If so, what would you recommend? Thanks!

Learn MySQL, MS Access is actually JetSQL, and similar if you learn the back end. But sounds like the best thing for you to learn is porting excel to a usable SQL tables. from that, pulling all your data is about learning how to properly query your database to give you set results, and the W3schools and mysql.coms forums (http://forums.mysql.com/) offer the best detailed answers to specific questions. I’m a web developer, not great DB admin, but familiar with Oracle and of course my web stuff is all WordPress which is PHP/MySQL based. MySQL is free, download it and play
